BYU Spring Practice Day 4 (March 11, 2013)

Hello, Cougar fans! With the spring-like weather BYU football headed outdoors for the first practice held outside this year on Monday. Here is the “Hatch of Knowledge” for Monday’s practice.

BYU welcomed the return of DE Bronson Kaufusi to the team after the BYU basketball team bowed out of the West Coast Conference Tournament last week.  Bronson will be with the team until basketball finds out their post-season plans.

Offensive Coordinator Robert Anae talked with the media and two important things came out of the interview. Coach Anae said that Graduate Assistant Andrew George will be the Inside Receivers Coach for the Cougars. He will be working with the Y (tight ends) and H (slot receiver) positions. You can hear Robert Anae and Andrew George talk about this assignment by clicking on the links to their interviews below. The other important news was Coach Anae’s comments regarding Houston Reynolds status. Coach Anae said he anticipated Houston not being a part of the team going forward but further clarification came later from BYU saying that Houston is definitely out for the duration of Spring Practices but his status going forward is yet to be determined.

Another note coming out of the Robert Anae interview was that former BYU quarterback Max Hall, who served as an undergraduate assistant last season, was going to give professional football one more go in the Canadian Football League.

The media was only able to observe the team segment of practice so personnel notes are going to be light. The offensive line saw one change along the front, as Terrence Aletto manned the center position in place of Manaaki Vaitai. The offensive front looked like this: Brad Wilcox (LT), Solomone Kafu (LG), Terrence Aletto (C), Kyle Johnson (RG), and Michael Yeck (RT).

Based on the team segment the media saw Taysom Hill was running with the ones at quarterback, while Ammon Olsen saw reps with the twos. Robert Anae said that Hill is running with the ones at QB but was quick to say that a starter has not been named.

Coach Anae said that three running backs are running with the ones currently, those being Jamaal Williams, Michael Alisa, and Adam Hine. Iona Pritchard is also seeing reps as a fullback, among other roles on the offense as well. Last week Running Backs Coach Mark Atuaia said Pritchard would be used in a myriad of roles as an H-back etc.

Highlight of the day- due to the shortened time the media had to watch practice the highlight goes to the 8 yard tiptoe dragging, sideline catch made by wide receiver Skyler Ridley from a lofted touch pass by Taysom Hill during the final drive of the team segment in practice.
