DEEP BYU THOUGHTS…………………… by: HANS OLSEN
November 16th, 2008
Last night on the post game show, I shared my disqust with this BYU defense. I went back and watched in detail some of the problems that occured. It was apparent to me that the linebackers did not spend enough time working on getting off of a cut block, most of the big runs were sprung by a helmet to one of the linebackers knees. I think Broncos issues with the cut block, (thinking they should be banned) have leaked onto the players, they had no desire to fend one off, and looked as though they spent no time preparing to do so. FYI: I have yet to see these guys work on live cut blocking in practice. My other issue came from the O-line, WHAT WAS WITH ALL THE OFFSIDES??? I have talked to some coaches that said the AFA D-line were giving fake audibles to draw them off, well that happens, deal with it. And why was Max sacked so often? I will tell you, no communication up front. On more than one occasion there were two blitzers smacking in to one O-lineman, he wold try to bump one and jump to the other, but that just won’t work in college ball. I think Fui and the boys lacked communication, and that caused not only sacks, but Max Hall to blow up at his line just before half. (which I think is the dumbest thing you can do as a QB, don’t cuss the guys taking care of you.)
When all is said and done, they got a win, Austin was great, the D-line did some great things, Max did some good things and the score board showed the results. Do I think it was good enough to beat Utah? No. Do I think they can put together a game to beat Utah? Hell yes they can!
Just a side note, BYU gave a glimpse of a trick hand late in this game, the wild cat. The wild cat will show it’s ugly head in the UofU game, and it won’t just be one or two times. Oh yeah, and have fun with your extra 2 hours a day in meetings getting ready for it Utah.
Final thoughts..
No Dennis Pitta, no win. (he was hurt bad in the AFA game diagnosed as an MCL sprain.)
No Ray Feinga, no time in the pocket for Max, not just because of R.J. Willing, but due to miscommunication across the board.(back spasm)
No Andrew Rich, No depth BIG CONCERN! (he was hurt bad in the AFA game. hard hit to the noggin, no concussion)
And one more thing, if Utah plays like they have practiced all year, and you get the same thing from BYU, GAME OVER FOR THE CATS.
ONLY ONE HOPOG THIS WEEK.
