WEEK 2 OF THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY FROM THE CF WEEKEND & A VIDEO BREAKDOWN OF “THE CALL”
September 7th, 2008
Here is a video of Locker’s “excessive” throwing of the ball in the air. I will openly admit he threw it higher than I thought after I saw it initially live but there is still no question in my mind that you do not call that penalty at that time.
THE BYU GOOD:
-Even though it was controversial BYU did finally win a non-conference road game for the first time in five years.
-Max Hall…Tried to force a couple of balls and did get picked off once but again was very impressive in executing the offense. If he keeps this pace up he will get Heisman consideration.
-Dennis Pitta…He’s a man-beast and BYU’s number one receiving weapon.
-Harvey Unga…Just a hard determined runner.
-BYU O-Line protection…Hall seemed rarely touched.
-Vakapuna’s blocking…Was instrumental in many of Unga’s runs.
-David Nixon…one of the few BYU defenders that I thought played well.
-Jan Jorgensen…came up big on the block on the 35yd extra point.
THE BYU BAD:
-Secondary...They have to show drastic improvement versus UCLA.
-Lack of pressure up front…could have been by design at times but much of the afternoon Locker had plenty of time to throw the ball or run.
-Lack of tackling…they appeared soft. Starting to agree with Hans in that this team needs to hit more in practice.
-Second half run defense. Once Washington’s starting RB got hurt BYU had issues with the back-ups.
-Austin Collie picking up a case of the dropsies.
-Unga fumbling at the goal line.
-CJ Santiago’s punting. Looks good in practice. Rarely takes that into games.
THE BYU UGLY:
-The unsportsmanlike celebration penalty on Locker. I know what the rule states but a ref just has to use common sense in that situation. The kid was excited and it wasn’t like he was blatantly celebrating. Just sad a game had to be decided on a call like that and honestly, whether BYU fans want to admit it or not, it does take away from the BYU victory. If you watched ESPN’s analysis of this game Saturday or saw this headline as the very first story listed on ESPN.com’s front page news section: “Celebration penalty costs Washington against BYU”, you know exactly what I mean.
THE UTAH GOOD:
-2nd Half Offense…Unpredictable and outstanding execution posts 28pts and 269 yards.
-Brian Johnson showing his ability to break open big plays with his legs.
-Ute Rush game…Nice mix of Johnson, Mack and Asiata racking up 225 yards.
-OLine…anytime you have that much success running the ball you have to give the five guys up front a ton of credit.
-Showing there is a purpose for a TE to actually be a receiver at times in this spread system with Colt Sampson catching a TD.
-2nd Half Defense…Shutting down Frank the Tank holding him to just 5yds.
-Kruger/Misi…these two DE’s are going to wreak havoc on the MWC this year.
-Special Teams…David Reed appears to be another weapon with a nice reverse run for a TD and a 49yd kick return to open up the second half to set up the first TD. John Peel contributed a nice 25 yard punt return that also set up a score.
THE UTAH BAD:
-1st Half…you just shouldn’t be tied at 14 with UNLV in your home opener when you’re a top 25 ranked team.
-1st half offense…it wasn’t as ugly as the 2nd half of the Michigan game but it was far from pretty. Just no flow once again.
-1st half defense…It was like a replay of last year with Frank The Tank running roughshod over the “D” for 82yds and two touchdowns.
-Missed tackles…Again reminded everyone of a year ago.
THE UTAH UGLY:
-Another DT injury. First it was Eliapo and now it’s Lei Talamaivao who broke his right fibula. You hate to see any kid go down particularly at a position that is the weakest on the team. Aaron Tonga will now have to step up along with true freshman Sealver Siliga and Dave Kruger will have to be pulled from his redshirt.
MISC. UGLY:
-My teams…Central Michigan gets blown out by Georgia and my home state WV Mountaineers fall to E. Carolina. BYU & Utah fans need to be a little nervous of that team by the way because they could leap past both in the BCS later in the year. As I write this Sunday morning, I am now a little nervous for my Jets.
