THE DWILL NEGOTIATION
July 8th, 2008

Deron Williams will have a lot of questions.  The Jazz will put on their best face and try to sell him on taking the five-year deal over the three-year option.  Here is how I expect the conversation to go:

DWill: How are we going to get better than the Lakers and compete for a championship?
Jazz: It all starts with you Deron.  You’re already the best point guard in the game today and most likely you’ll be the best ever when it’s all said and done.  You sign a five-year deal and that will send a message to the entire league that Utah is an elite franchise and players will jump at anything to play with you.

DWill: Will you be able to re-sign Carlos Boozer when he most likely opts out next year?
Jazz: No question.  We know he and his wife love it here and we know he loves you so if you want Carlos to stay consider it done.

DWill: How bout AK?  Can you get his crying you know what out of here?
Jazz: Sure will.  We’ll send him on his way with a handshake and a box of tissues.

DWill: Is the organization willing to go over the cap if it can help in winning a title?
Jazz: Are you willing to take less money? (Awkward silence-then laughter) We’re just kidding!  Of course we will.  We never have to this point but Larry has said he wants to win a title for the fans so anything goes.

DWill: Who will be considered and what input will I have in deciding the team’s next coach?
Jazz: Heck if you want, you can be the next coach.  I mean your calling the plays already right?  Not even John Stockton did that.  But seriously whoever you want your next coach to be just let us know and we’ll make it happen.

DWill: Why should I sign for 5-years as opposed to the shorter 3-year deal?
Jazz: Because we appreciate all that you have already done and will do for the franchise.  This is your team, your city, your state, your organization.  The keys are yours.  Drive it to wherever you want.  In fact drive it onto your own street!  John Stockton Drive no more…it’s DWill Drive!  Plus we know money isn’t everything but $90 million guaranteed isn’t bad right?

DWill: I love what your saying guys but I think I’ll go with the three-year deal.  But I still expect you to live up to everything you said today.  In fact let’s get that in writing as well.
Jazz: Sure thing Dwill (muttering to themselves as they walk away…)
