LAKERS 108 JAZZ 105…GAME 6 GRAHAM SLAMS FROM THE ESA:
May 16th, 2008
Listen to all the Post-game interviews in the audio section of the website.
-They simply didn’t come to play for the first three quarters and put themselves in too big of a hole to climb out. It reminded me a lot of last year’s elimination game at San Antonio. The energy was low to start. The offensive execution was awful as the team once again resorted to taking jump shots. The defense was worse. In the 4th quarter they finally decided to show some heart and it really was amazing they had two legitimate open three-point chances in the final seconds to tie the game. The question is where was that intensity in the first three quarters? It was really a sad end to what was a solid season.
-Carlos Boozer was flat out awful once again. I will give him credit for being more aggressive. He just could not finish. He could not hit his jump shots. To make matters worse he then fouled out with 4+ minutes to play. Then again that probably helped the Jazz in making their run with Paul Millsap playing much better in his stead. His disappearance offensively and his utter lack of regard to play defense are the main reasons the Jazz were eliminated. I am curious to see how he comes back from this meltdown next year. Even if he has another strong regular season this will haunt him going into next year’s playoffs.
-AK in his final game in a Jazz uniform (yes you are reading this correctly) hit a couple of huge three’s in the final seconds but was mediocre the rest of the game. Overall he took early shots in the offense and even choked a two handed dunk. What he did was inexcusable. You don’t miss practice before the most important game of the season. You don’t fly to another city the day before an elimination game in the playoffs. And you definitely don’t do it for a vacation. His fate is sealed. The question is what sucker will take on that contract. Who knows maybe some GM out there will be enamored with AK’s clutch shooting. But then again Isiah Thomas is no longer around.
-Deron Williams was solid but with his teammates struggling the way they were he probably should have taken even a bigger scoring role. Easier said than done I guess considering the Lakers practically doubled him every time he touched the ball. He really is the only one on this team that at the end of the night could say he gave it his all in this series.
-Now it’s on to the off-season. The AK watch is officially on. The question is can they unload him for an interior player that actually has some toughness about him and is willing to play defense. The draft will essentially be a waste of time unless the Jazz decide to move up. I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade out of the first round. On the positive side, this team will be a year older and has an emerging superstar in Deron Williams.
