IF I WAS AN AP VOTER…PLUS RIFFS ON COLLIE & KRUGER
January 9th, 2009

LIFE IS GOOD THESE DAYS FOR TIM TEBOW EVEN THOUGH IT’S A TAINTED CHAMPIONSHIP

I give you two polls.  The one I would have submitted if I was an AP Voter and the other based on truly what I think the rankings should be based on my assessment of what I’ve seen on the field.

MY AP TOP 5:
1.  UTAH
2.  FLORIDA
3.  USC
4.  TEXAS
5.  OKLAHOMA

Except for the 16 voters who did vote Utah #1, the rest of them blew it.  I don’t want to ever read another column or article from a writer complaining about the BCS if they didn’t vote Utah #1.  Based on the criteria college football makes us follow, this was their chance to send the BCS idiots a message that their system and so-called Championship is a fraud.  They didn’t do it and if we have to live with this crap for several more years they will partly be to blame.

So yes I would have voted Utah #1 to send that message because of what they accomplished.  Now if I would have voted based on who I thought would win if each team played head-to-head on a neutral field at the end of the season here is how it would have looked:

1.  FLORIDA
2.  USC
3.  UTAH
4.  TEXAS
5.  OKLAHOMA

No knock on the Utes.  They would compete with USC and Florida and deserve that opportunity but I think in the end both should win.  Then again I thought Alabama should win as well.  Too bad we couldn’t find out.

AUSTIN COLLIE DECLARES FOR NFL DRAFT:
It was an emotional day for Collie and he broke up a bit (I know Ute fans, start the Beck crying jokes) talking about his decision and I’m sure it wasn’t easy but it was the right one.  Even though he will not be picked on day one of the draft Collie had nothing left to prove by staying another year.  He led the country in receiving.  Even if he repeated that feat his draft status would have probably stayed the same.  I think he has a chance to stick due to his size, precision route running and his hands.  As he said today he just needs to find a way to improve his speed.

IS PAUL KRUGER NEXT?
An NFL source told me Kruger’s draft assessment came back “4th to 7th round.”  That is a worst case scenario as most experts think he’s the 5th to 8th best DE in the country which would put him late first or early second round.  A good combine could move him further into the first round.  If he stayed and had another dominant year he may be as high as the 3rd or 4th best DE but he would be the age of 24 which is not a plus in the NFL world.  It might be in his best interest to go the way of Collie and play at the next level as well.
