FINAL BYU SCRIMMAGE OBSERVATIONS
August 20th, 2008

-The reserves got majority of the snaps and it wasn’t pretty.  Bronco wasn’t happy and questioned the depth of his team.  We did learn that the defensive reserves are better than the offensive reserves.

-Some of the lowlights included three interceptions (Gaskins-2; McEuen-1).  Four of five punts were blocked (three straight at one point) with mostly reserves in the line-up each time.

-If Max Hall is out for any reason BYU is in serious trouble.  They might as well line-up in the wishbone with Harvey Unga, J.J. Diluigi and Fui Vakapuna and Stephen Covey at QB.  Covey looked like the best QB on the field today among the back-ups leading the offense to their only score.  He even threw the ball downfield connecting with Di Luigi on a 57-yard reception.

-Di Luigi continues to impresses me.  In the past BYU has had guys like Nate Meickle and Bryce Muhuika (nursing an injury) running those shorter routes.  No knock on those guys, but neither are close to the athlete Di Luigi is.  They caught the ball and were usually brought down immediately.  Di Luigi is a playmaker.

-On the kicking competition…Mitch Payne hit 5 of 6 FG’s before practice (only miss was from 63yds).  Justin Sorensen was 3 of 6 (misses from 40, 49, 63).  Bronco says Payne has an edge but may wait until gameday to name a kicker but expects to use them both.

-Austin Collie worked out with Max Hall after practice.  Expects to work out tomorrow and then join full-team workouts Monday.

-Overall Bronco told me he was very happy with camp.  Thinks this team is further along than any other BYU team he has coached to date.  We’ll find out very very soon.
