Bronco Mendenhall, Harvey Unga, Andrew Rich and Corby Eason talk about the broken finger and USU
September 29th, 2009

Here is Harvey talking about the pinky and how much he needs Manase to survive. I don’t think Harvey processes pain.

Here is Bronco talking about the injured hand of Harvey. DR. Bronco Mendenhall in the house!!!

I have to tell you BYU fans…. this kid is one of the nicest outstanding young men on the field for BYU. I’ve liked him and his on field presence since day one. I have yet to meet a kid from out of Utah that loves the people and the state more than this kid. He is a good student and a no nonsense guy, and yet he brings a flavor and a style that is so needed on the BYU field. He bridges a major gap between the clean cut Utah Mormon and the flashiness that is NCAA football, but he does it with class. In my mind, he is exactly what this team needs! Ladies and gentleman…..Corby Eason!

I have to put all the speed talk too rest, here is Andrew Rich answering the big question, how fast are you? I could see this kid landing a spot on an NFL team playing a special teams specialist. There were many guys like him on rosters while I was there. He has more heart than most men twice his size, and when healthy and in the right spot can deliver a blow that would jar a ball loose from Brandon Jacobs. Here’s the beast himself, Andrew Rich, by the way, if you want to see how tuff these guys are, check out the bruise Andrew is playing with, you can see it on his leg. I am reminded how tuff you have to be to last a season.

If John Lund played football it would look like this
September 29th, 2009

I swear I can see John pulling something like this…... But it’s not his fault folks, he’s just a wittle guy…. And you didn’t hear this from me, but I heard Boozer is John’s sugar daddy. But who are we to judge?

Ravens take over the top spot for their play on the field.  Cheerleaders not bad either!

WEEK 3: NFL TOP 5…BOTTOM 5 (Record/Last wk’s ranking):
TOP 5:

1) RAVENS (2-0: #2): Offense producing points while defense is giving up more points than expected.
2) GIANTS (2-0; #3): Gmen & Eli Manning ruin Cowboys regular season stadium debut.
3) SAINTS (2-0; NR): Drew Brees & saints rolling up points with 48 in Philly.
4) JETS (2-0; NR): Defense yet to give up a TD, Sanchez is not making mistakes & they roughed up Brady.
5) FALCONS (2-0; NR): Matt Ryan looks like he’s going to avoid the sophomore slump.
Dropped out: STEELERS, PATRIOTS, PACKERS

BOTTOM 5:
1) LIONS (0-2; #1): Too bad they can’t get credit for half a win leading Vikes 10-7 at halftime.
2) RAMS (0-2; #2): Rams should be thankful to the Lions otherwise they would be last.
3) BROWNS (0-2; #4): Brady Quinn bad in loss to Donkeys.
4) CHIEFS (0-2; #3): KC doubles Oakland in offensive production & time of possession but still loses.
5) JAGUARS (0-2; NR): Jags rocked at home by Cardinals.
Dropped out: TEXANS

Photo evidence of FSU dominating BYU
September 21st, 2009

I would bet my life that an overweight Smith’s grocery shopper in one of those mobile wheelchair grocery cart thingys could mosey through this hole. When I saw this it made me think of Noah when he split the red ocean and all the Lamanites crossed without harm….....with there animals…? OKAY I think there were animals…...

This truck was seen later driving through the same hole…...

Ravens showing they have an offense.  Raven cheerleaders showing, uh, umm.  They’re just showing!

Here is the second week of the NFL Top 5/Bottom 5.  Catch it live at 3:32pm every day on 1280 The Zone.

NFL TOP 5…BOTTOM 5 (Record/Last wk’s ranking):
TOP 5:
1) STEELERS (1-0; #1): Defending champs haven’t missed a beat on defense although curious to see how they perform without the injured Troy Polamalu.
2) RAVENS (1-0: #2): If Flacco continues week one performance and defense firms up from semi-disappointing effort vs. Chiefs this team will be very scary.
3) GIANTS (1-0; #4): Nothing flashy but a great defense with an adequate offense is enough to be Super Bowl contender.
4) PACKERS (1-0; #5): Pack winning combination—a tough defense with a QB in Aaron Rodgers that is coming into his own.
5) PATRIOTS (1-0; #3): Did the real Brady finally emerge in the final two minutes of comeback win over Bills?
Dropped out: TITANS

BOTTOM 5:
1) LIONS (0-1; #1): 18 game losing streak should go to 19 Sunday vs. Minnesota.
2) RAMS (0-1; NR): Rumors are this is the team that could be bought and moved to London.  After 28-0 loss to Seattle, Rams fans probably wouldn’t mind shipping them to Siberia.
3) CHIEFS (0-1; #3): New coach, same results.
4) BROWNS (0-1; #4): No one is calling Mangini Manginius anymore.
5) TEXANS (0-1; NR): Offense inept and defense unable to slow down a rookie QB in loss to Jets.
Dropped out: BRONCOS, RAIDERS

COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 2 REVIEW, WEEK 3 PREVIEW
September 13th, 2009

COLLEGE FOOTBALL GOOD, BAD AND THE UGLY WEEK 2 WITH WEEK 3 PREVIEWS BELOW

BYU IS LEGIT, TCU IS LEGIT, UTAH NOT SO MUCH:

The Cougars blew the doors off Tulane 54-3 and showed that there would be no hangover, (It’s BYU of course not), from the OU win celebration. The defense is good, the offense clicked and they got the starters some rest. Harvey Unga didn’t have to play and now he’ll be ready for Florida State who barely survived Jacksonville State, BYU will win next week at home. More good news for the #9 Cougars, #5 Oklahoma State lost to Houston and #8 Ohio State lost at home to USC, opening room for the boys in blue to move up. TCU was rocking Virginia on the road 30-0 late in the 4th with a yardage advantage of nearly 300 to 73 and if not for 2 late meaningless TD’s with the back-ups in this game would have been a shutout. TCU’s defense is fast as usual and Andy Dalton has a ton of weapons. I flipped back and forth between this game and the BYU game and both teams impressed on both sides of the ball. While the Utes numbers were good against San Jose, with a nearly 500 to 260 advantage in yards, execution in crunch time, corner play by RJ Stanford, the kicking game and other flaws were exposed. I’ve been complaining for 3 years that RJ Stanford couldn’t find the ball if it were a raw steak and he were a bloodhound, Ben Vroman missed 3 FG’s and the last one which got him a ride on the bench, wasn’t even in the same area code as the goal posts. For a physical smash mouth team Utah has no clue what to do on short yardage, get your self a power package please and the Utes had 5 turnovers in their first 6 quarters of play this year, including 2 fumbles in two games by Asiata. It’s enough to send Kyle Whittingham to the squat rack refuge for the next 3 days. If Utah repeats these errors in Eugene next weekend at Autzen, the loudest little stadium in college football, the streaks will be over.

NON-BCS CONFERENCE REPORT:

This report would have a looked a whole lot better had UNLV held on to beat Oregon State at home, but they didn’t, OSU got a late FG to win 23-21. The biggest win was Conference USA’s Houston winning on the road at Oklahoma State 45-35. In fact the Big 12, who many think is CFB’s best conference, took it on the chin where K-State lost to Louisiana-Lafeyette, Colorado got smacked by Toledo, Iowa State was smoked by Iowa and Mizzou almost was upset at home by Bowling Green. In addition to UNLV’s near miss, Fresno State lost in OT at Wisconsin 34-31. Kevin Graham’s Central Michigan won at Michigan State 29-27,

MWC REPORT

In addition to BYU, TCU and Utah winning, the biggest story fror a quarter or so was Wyoming 10 Texas 7. From that point forward though the Horns outscored the Pokes 34-0 to win 41-10 in Laramie. Air Force lost a toss up game at Minnesota of the Big Ten 20-13, Colorado State survived Ronnie Mac and Weber 24-23 at home. As mentioned UNLV lost on a last second FG to Oregon State at home 23-21. SDSU topped Southern Utah 35-19 and New Mexico looks like the bottom feeder of the conference as they were embarassed 44-10 at home by Tulsa. Overall, not a great week for the MWC with games that were considered toss-ups going into the weekend all turning up as L’s with New Mexico, UNLV and Air Force losing to Conference USA, the Pac-10 and the Big Ten.

NEXT WEEK:

BYU takes on Florida State who barely escaped Jacksonville State 19-9 at home. The Seminoles needed two scores in the final 35 seconds to avoid arguably one of the most embarrassing upsets in school history.Ty Jones’ 1-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left put the Seminoles ahead of lower-division Jacksonville (Ala.) State and teammate Kevin McNeil returned a fumble for a score 21 seconds later to seal the victory. Utah’s next opponent Oregon topped Purdue at home 38-36. Trailing 38-30, the Boilermakers’ Keith Smith found Aaron Valentin with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:01 left. But Kyle Adams was out of bounds when he caught Joey Elliott’s 2-point pass to tie it and Oregon (1-1) held on for the victory.

SARK GETS A W

For the first time since November of 2007 Washington won a football game. The Huskies topped lowly Idaho of the WAC 42-23. The win snapped a 15-game losing streak.

THE BIG STOIRES

Freshman Matt Barkley led #3 USC on a game-winning drive to beat #8 Ohio State in Columbus 18-15, Everyone outside of South Bend rejoiced at Michigan’s 38-34 come back win over the Irish, ending Lou Holtz dream of gold helmets in the National Championship Game, Tate Forcier threw a TD pass with 11 ticks left to win it, #21 Georgia outlasted South Carolina 41-37.

MUST BE THE MONEY

Why else would these games be played? Florida 56 Troy 6, Virginia Tech 52 Marshall 10, Cal 59 Eastern Washington 7, NC State 65 Murray State 7, Texas Tech 55 Rice 10, Oklahoma 64 Idaho State 0, Cincinnati 70 SE Missouri State 3, Boise State 48 Miami-Ohio 0.

HALL FOR HEISMAN?

Rivals.com has Max Hall #4 in their weekly ballot behind Saint Tebow, Colt and Cal RB Jahvid Best.

STORYLINES FOR NEXT WEEK:

1. How will Utah bounce back? The final numbers say the Utes were okay against San Jose but they have many issues to address (kicking game, corner, turnovers, offensive game planning. knick-knack injuries to Asiata and Schlauderhaff and how Misi is feeling after his first game) before taking on the Oregon Ducks in one of the toughest stadiums to play in on the West Coast next Saturday.

2. Can BYU keep it up? If Florida State’s first two games are any indication yes. Maybe the Noles were looking past Jacksonville State, whom they needed 2 late TD’s against at home to survive 19-9 or maybe FSU still isn’t back and this is similar to Utah vs. Michigan last year; a fomer top level program that looks tough on paper but needs a major tune up. If BYU plays like they have the first two weeks, especially on defense, they should beat FSU easily.

3. Could Boise lose a WAC game next week? Fresno may be back after an OT 34-31 loss at Big Ten power Wisconsin. Pat Hill and the Bulldogs host the Broncos and it may be the last best chance that someone beats Boise and denies them of an easy road to the BCS. Everyone who doesn’t color coordinate their orange, blue and white is hoping for the upset.

4. National game you can’t miss: After talking trash all off-season, Lane Kiffin’s Vols stunk at home in a 18-15 loss to UCLA this week. They get Urban Meyer and the Gators on the road this week, the target for most of the hot air coming from Kiffin’s pie hole. At least you have a hot wife Lane.

5. MWC on the stage again: When you cry to congress for a spot in the BCS party, you can’t just beat Oklahoma and call it a year:

Florida State (ACC) @ BYU: The Cougars should stomp the team formerly known as the Seminoles.

Utah @ Oregon (Pac-10): Utah has much to clean up but K-Whitt usually gets his team up for the big game. Look for the offense to open up more and the Utes to be more focused after a brutal week of practice.

Wyoming @ Colorado (Big 12): I would have said the Pokes had no shot in this game before the season started but CU is terrible and 0-2. In addition, Wyo coach Dave Christensen was the OC at Missouri the last several years and knows the Buffs maybe well enough to pull off a shocker like last year’s Tennessee win.

Nevada (WAC) @ Colorado State: The Pack had a week off to lick their wounds after a 35-0 loss at Notre Dame and CSU barely sqeaked by Ronnie Mac and Weber 24-23. We all thought the Rams were good when they won at Colorado but the Buffs stink. Colorado State needs to win to shut Karl Benson’s trap about the WAC being on par with the MWC.

San Diego State @ Idaho (WAC) Another WAC-MWC affair and you couldn’t pay me to watch it, but it’s important none the less for the reasons mentioned above. SDSU might be the MWC’s 2nd worst team, (New Mexico holds down the bottom spot honor), and Idaho battles New Mexico State for the bottom of the WAC. Have fun in Moscow, Idaho boys.

Texas State @ TCU: I had no idea there was a Texas State and I lived in Texas. Frogs roll before they go on the road next week to take on Clemson.

HawaII (WAC) @ UNLV: The third WAC-MWC match-up of the weekend and UNLV doesn’t have time to wallow in self pity after the close Oregon State loss at home. Hawaii doesn’t do the mainland well and Vegas should win to make the conference 3-0 against the WAC for the weekend.

Air Force @ New Mexico: The only MWC head to head match-up of the week should be a laugher for the Falcons. New Mexico has been out scored 85-16 in their first two games and the offense has 0 TD’s to their opponents 11. The defense gives up 550 YPG, the offense gains 201. Not good.

BATTLE OF THE AGGIES

Gary Andersen and Utah State travel to College Station Texas to tangle with Texas A and M next Saturday. New Mexico was smashed 2 weeks ago 41-6, but I think USU could beat the Lobos. While it is unlikely to happen, a win would be a big step towards a program turn around and a close loss would earn the good guy Aggies some much needed confidence and respect
