UTAH OR UTAH STATE?  KALANI AND AARON HAVE NOT DECIDED YET
December 4th, 2008

I have it very easy you see, I was a teammate with both of these men, so I know what they are and aren’t doing(I don’t have to guess like other stations). What I know for sure is that they are not headed for Utah State.........YET. They are very aware of the situation, that being they are wanted at both Universities by both Whittingham and Anderson, but there is a lot of soul searching that has to be done yet. I have been told that I will be the first to know, so stay tuned to the John and Hans show every morning from 6-10am, the decision will be made shortly.
image
My bad Aaron, I couldn’t find any pictures of you online old friend. I tried to make your collage look busy anyways.
image
I wanted to write a small blurp on people in our line of work. When media decides to report with no base of absolute knowladge, it is irresponsible and leads to problems for those the news has been broken on. I happen to know the early misguided report by another station and paper has caused grief for these two men, and was a mistake made by the people who reported it. I hope in the future they research it before they say it as fact!

MIAMI TOO MUCH HEAT FOR JAZZ

Make that 3 losses in the last 5 home games for the Jazz as Miami comes into the cement block downtown and wins 93-89. The Heat outscored the Jazz 55-41 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined and injuries to Boozer, AK and Harp continue to chip away at the depth of the team. In the TV post, prepetual Jazz appologist Pace the Ghost tried to blame a back to back for the Jazz lack of energy failing to note that it was Miami’s 5th game of a 5 game western road swing, what a joke of an excuse. I know the check says “Jazz” Ghost but make it less obvious in the future huh? Paul Millsap once again led the way for the Jazz with 20 and 13. D-Will had 13 points and 5 assists but 6 turnovers and was just 4-12. Hopefully the Jazz won’t be too tired for their game Friday night against the Raptors who just fired their HC Sam Mitchell who was the NBA Coach of the Year just two seasons ago. I’m sure he really deserved it over Jerry Sloan, who has never won the award.

WHITT AND WASHINGTON

The Seattle Times reports what we talked about today, that if Utah Defensive coordinator Gary Andersen thought Kyle Whittingham was going to leave the Utes he wouldn’t have taken the Utah State job becuase he knows he would top the Utah list: “Another coach who could be edging closer to being off the list is Utah’s Kyle Whittingham. Utah’s defensive coordinator, Gary Andersen, had the head coaching job at Utah State. Some feel he wouldn’t do that if he thought Whittingham was leaving, because he would be a logical candidate to succeed Whittingham at Utah. Whittingham is also in line for a raise and extension.”

ANDERSEN IS AN AGGIE

Now former Utah Defensive coordinator Gary Andersen is the new head football coach at Utah State.A press conference to officially announce Andersen as the new head coach will take place Thursday afternoon at 1 PM in Logan.

GARY ANDERSEN ACCEPTS UTAH STATE JOB…HERE ARE MORE DETAILS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN REPORTED UNTIL NOW
December 3rd, 2008

AS OF 3:20PM THURSDAY:
-Gary Andersen joined us live from Logan.  You can listen to the entire interview here.
-He laid out his plan that we discussed...Recruit in-state...put in a missionary recruiting plan...create a Polynesian pipeline.
-He will meet with Kyle Whittingham tomorrow to discuss the bowl game and whether certain Ute assistants will join him in Logan.  On the bowl game he did confirm what I reported earlier that he doesn’t feel he can serve as defensive coordinator for that game.
-Reports are saying Ute assistants Aaron Roderick and Kilane Sitake are definitely joining Andersen at USU.  Our own Hans Olsen checked in and reported that his sources are saying those reports are false and that neither have made a decision yet.  That goes along with what I filed earlier that Andersen felt he could get Roderick but Sitake would be heavily pursued by Whittingham.  After listening to John and Hans’ interview this morning with Whitt for a second time, I am convinced he’ll offer the vacant defensive coordinator to Sitake maybe as early as tomorrow.

Keep listening to 1280 The Zone or check the blogs for the most accurate and breaking news 24/7.

AS OF 10:10AM THURSDAY:
-As mentioned below Andersen is signing the Letter of Agreement before his press conference.  Contract will be signed in about a week.  I’ve been told most items have been agreed to in principal but just need to be hashed out in detail and put to paper.  A few items that I have not reported to this point includes the ability to control scheduling.  Obviously coaches want to put themselves in the best position to win.  Any good AD wants to win as well so I’m sure the two will come to an understanding.  Other items to get worked out include a buyout in case Andersen gets offered a job at a bigger program down the line and the dollars allocated towards assistant coaches.  A source told me that Andersen wanted to be assured that his assistants pay would be in line with the upper half of the WAC.  Obviously Scott Barnes agreed to this scenario.
-More details on the contract...5 year deal with a base of 350k which includes in radio/TV. Factor in camps/cars/incentive package and the deal goes to 400k.  When it’s all said and done Andersen will make over 100k more than Brent Guy.
-As Kyle Whittingham told John and Hans this morning, discussions are continuing on whether Andersen will coach in Utah’s BCS Bowl game.  A source close to Andersen has told me that he would like to be there to coach say the defensive line and offer input but does not feel he can be the defensive coordinator for the game.  Basically he doesn’t think it’s fair to either program to not be able to give his maximum effort.
-On the assistant coaching front as I posted last night, Andersen would like current Ute assistants Aaron Roderick and Kilani Sitake to come to Logan.  It appears Roderick is likely to go, but I have learned that Whittingham is going to make every effort to keep Sitake.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he is promoted to defensive coordinator.  Obviously the other big thing Sitake has going for him is his connections on the islands for polynesian recruits.  This would be a good thing for Utah to retain him but a blow to Andersen who was hoping Sitake would come along to help him implement his polynesian pipeline plan to Utah State.

Andersen will join us today on 1280 The Zone at 3:20pm.  Keep listening and checking the blog for further details.

AS OF 9:10PM GARY ANDERSEN HAS OFFICIALLY ACCEPTED THE UTAH STATE FOOTBALL HEAD COACHING JOB...
-Andersen will sign the letter of agreement Thursday morning.  An official contract will be signed in about a week.
-The Press Conference is scheduled in Logan on Thursday at 1pm.  Andersen will also join our show most likely in the 4pm hour.
-Once again my source has confirmed that it’s a 5 year deal worth around the 400k per year I posted earlier.
-Andersen did meet with Kyle Whittingham tonight and also called his players to let them know he was leaving.  Still no word on whether he will coach the bowl game.
-I have also learned that Andersen is interested in taking current Ute WR’s coach Aaron Roderick (his former offensive coordinator at Southern Utah) and Utah LB’s coach Kilani Sitake (former OL/TE Coach at SUU) with him to Logan.  A source also told me he may bring back a couple of former Ute coaches to join him at USU as well.

For the latest updates keep checking the blog and listening to 1280 The Zone.

AT 3:35PM AS WE REPORTED ON THE AIR FIRST SOURCES TOLD ME GARY ANDERSEN HAS VERBALLY ACCEPTED THE UTAH STATE FOOTBALL HEAD COACHING JOB.  HERE ARE THE OTHER DETAILS...
-A letter of agreement will be signed either tonight or tomorrow (Thursday).  I have learned the deal will be for five years.  As for the dollars, sources told me he was being offered “six figures” more than Brent Guy.  If Guy was making around 300k I’m estimating Andersen will make somewhere near the 400k range.
-A press conference to officially announce Andersen as the new head coach will most likely take place early Thursday afternoon.
-Andersen will talk with Kyle Whittingham tonight and I’m sure that’s when they will determine an exit strategy and whether he will coach the defense in the BCS Bowl.

Keep listening to 1280 The Zone for all the details.

GARY ANDERSEN & UTAH STATE GETTING CLOSE TO A DONE DEAL
December 3rd, 2008

UPDATED ON GARY ANDERSEN AND THE UTAH STATE HEAD COACHING POSITION:
-In Tuesday’s meetings, USU wanted to see if Andersen was committed to being there or was he going to use them as a negotiating ploy with the New Mexico & San Diego State opportunities.  Andersen wanted to make sure USU was committed to do what is necessary to make it a winning program.  Both sides walked away convinced that it’s a good fit for both parties.
-According to multiple sourses a deal is expected to get done in the next 48 hours pending any hiccups.  However the biggest possible hiccup being money is not going to be an issue.  Sources say the money is more than what Andersen expected and significantly more than what Brent Guy was making.  In addition I was told Andersen was impressed with the USU committment of dollars towards paying assistant coaches (although Andersen will push for more), recruiting budget and facilities.  Andersen was also very impressed with the upgraded facilities and he also met with the players committee leaving with a very positive feeling towards their committment to do what is necessary to win on the field.
-Andersen is bringing his wife and kids to Logan today.  For those that have ever gone through a job change involving a move getting the wife on board is a very important step.  The fact Andersen is taking the family to see and meet with USU officials is a clear sign that this thing is close to being done.  USU’s location is a big positive for the family considering his son plays football and attends Juan Diego.  This way he won’t have to totally uproot his family from the Salt Lake area until he graduates.

BREAKING NEWS: MORE SCHOOLS INTERESTED IN GARY ANDERSEN & NFL TOP 5/BOTTOM 5
December 2nd, 2008

UPDATE ON UTAH DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR GARY ANDERSEN HEAD COACHING POSSIBILITIES:
A very credible source confirmed to me this morning (Tuesday) that Andersen is meeting with Utah State officials for a second time today to discuss that opening further.  As far as my source knows, he is the first to get a second interview and today they will be discussing budgetary issues which includes salary for himself as well as assistants etc.  As we have talked about on the show, if the terms are right Andersen may take that job by the end of the week.  However he has also been contacted by the search firms for San Diego State and New Mexico for their vacant head coaching positions.  As for Utah don’t rule them out either about making a push to keep him as their Defensive Coordinator.  If Kyle Whittingham would happen to leave for the Washington job (in my opinion, not likely to happen), Andersen would be the favorite to take over the Utes position.  When it’s all said and done, it’s good to be Gary right now.  Keep checking the blog and listening to 1280 The Zone for all the latest news.

WHITT TO GET NEW DEAL?

.According to the Seattle Times Washington Huskies Blog, Kyle Whittingham is in discussions with Utah AD Chris Hill to redo his deal with the Utes to end speculation of him leaving As the Times correctly puts it, “He’s looking for reasons to stay at Utah.” We’ve said this from the begining. Whitt has been here, is from here and his family likes it here. He doesn’t spend money, a nice way to say he’s cheap and he doesn’t need the millions and the pressure to turn around a program when he finally has put his true stamp on the Utah program. I think this is his destination job.

MILLSAP/BOOZER RUMORS ALREADY STARTING TO FLOAT

With Paul Millsap averaging over 19 points and 12 rebounds per as Carlos Boozer fights a quad injury, noted NBA rumorologist Sam Smith says teams around the NBA are starting to take notice of Millsap: “One under the radar free agent for this summer is Utah’s Paul Millsap. The thinking is the Jazz will only be able to afford to bring back Carlos Boozer, though Millsap will get a pile of their money if Boozer leaves. They’d like to keep both, which is why there always is Andrei Kirilenko rumors and speculation. One Western Conference coach told me his team prefers when Boozer plays over Millsap because Millsap is such a superior defender”

PLEX AND HIS GUN UPDATE

On Tuesday we’ll talk more about Plaxico Burress and his gun and why so many pro athletes feel the need to pack heat. Hans played in the NFl and knew lots of guys who packed...What does he think? Meanwhile the Mayor of NYC wants Plex to go behind bars for 31/2 years for the incident. 31/2 for packing heat and Vick gets out in a year for brutalizing dogs?

I realize there is much ball to be played and I’ll vote again, but here is my first 20 or first 25% of the season All-Star ballot.......I’d vote Boozer if he wasn’t hurt and Paul and Kobe are better even if D-Will was healthy. Biedrins beats out Yao. The Warriors Center averages nearly 16 ppg and over 12 rpg and is a solid low post defender. His effeciency rating is better than Yao and he works with less in Golden State. Thoughts?

DESPITE WIN OVER SONNERS, LONGHORNS LEFT OUT OF BIG 12 TITLE, CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PICTURE

As expected, Oklahoma jumped Texas despite the Longhons 45-35 win on a neutral field earlier this season. Texas’ only loss was a last second job to #7 Texas Tech. OU beat OK-State Saturday night while Texas failed to impress voters with a 49-9 thrashing of A&M on Thanksgiving evening. We always say it, but we need a playoff and even though we also always say maybe this is the year where something gets done because of another injustice, were stuck with the system even if Obama wants to change it. I think he’s got these little things called the economy, bailouts, the war, the housing market, the credit crunch, health care, education........and about 500,000 other issues before it trickles down to anything regarding sports.
For the record, the best explanation I heard from a voter for keeping one above the other in the OU-Texas debate was from Stewart Mandel of Si.com: Much like an instant replay review, I need “insurmountable evidence” to convince me to move one team (Oklahoma) above another (Texas). All I see are two extremely deserving teams with no discernible separation between them—except, of course, for that 10-point margin on the day they played each other.”The Horns should play for the Big 12 and National Title but CFB, like llife ain’t fair........

DOES OREGON STATE LOSS AFFECT UTES BOWL DESTIANTION?

Doubtful but possible. With the Beavers loss to Oregon Saturday night that almost assuredly puts USC in the Rose Bowl and takes the Trojans out of a Fiesta Bowl berth. If OSU would have won, USC would have been the pick of the Fiesta Bowl, which has first pick of at-large teams this season. USC now has to beat UCLA and they go to the Rose. The pick for the Fiesta, which has the coveted #1 pick and a Big 12 tie-in will be down to Utah or Ohio State. Even with Utah being much closer on the map, Bucks fans will travel better even in this ecoonomy. Plus with the first pick of at-large teams, the Fiesta is unlikely to go with a lower profile program like Utah from a conference like the MWC. Here is how the BCS bowls shake out:
TITLE GAME: BCS #1 vs. BCS #2 (Florida vs. Oklahoma)-Assuming Florida beats Bama in SEC title game and OU beats Mizzou in Big 12 title game.....
ROSE: Big Ten #1 vs. Pac-10 #1 (Penn St. vs. USC)
FIESTA: Big 12 vs. At-Large #1 pick (Texas vs. Ohio State)-Bucks highest profile team left and make for big name, highly rated bowl with two large fan bases.
SUGAR: SEC vs. At-Large pick #2 (Alabama vs. Utah)-Bama loses to Florida in SEC title game, pick comes down to 10-2 Cincy of the Big East and 12-0 Utah.
ORANGE: ACC #1 vs. At-Large #3 pick. (Va-Tech-BC winner vs. Cincinnati, winner of Big East) Likely Va. Tech vs. Cincy in match-up of two dissapointing but automatic bid conferences. Boise State vs. Texas Tech would be more deserving according to the BCS standings but won’t happen.

THIS GUY IS RIGHT

I keep telling you that college football is a business. It is not about finding a true champion, being fair, matching up the best teams or in general doing what is best for the sport or what is most entertaining for its fans. It is however all about business and making money. Stewart Mandel of SI.com has it right when he says non-BCS conferences need to settle down: “That the mid-majors are getting greedy. The media crusade has begun to get one of the BCS bowls to invite 12-0 Boise State (in addition to 12-0 Utah). Give me a break. While it’s nice that Utah, Boise State and Hawaii have gotten to play on the big stage in recent years, the reality is, their inclusion is not in the bowls’ best business interests. Those teams’ games have drawn three of the six lowest TV ratings in BCS history. And even if Boise took every one of its season-ticket holders to, say, the Fiesta Bowl, they still wouldn’t broach Ohio State’s traveling horde.

AK GETS SOME NATIONAL LOVE

Kind of a weird time to go back and re-hash the AK-Sloan relationship on a national level but that is exactly what SI.com and Andrei and Masha Kirilenko did recently. Things seem to be going well with AK relishing the 6th man role and all the trade talk has been tabled largely due to #47’s insanely big pay check, but when have the Masha’s ever not complained loudly?

ONE MWC COACHING VACANCY IS FILLED

Missouri Offensive Coordinator Dave Christensen, who had ties to the University of Washington and was expected to be a strong candidate for that job, bolted for another UW, the University of Wyoming to take over for Joe Glenn. I bet his family is estatic, if estactic means they want to kill themselves. The three finalists for the UW post were Christensen, Nebraska wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore, a former Wyoming WR and coach, and former Louisville, Michigan State and Utah State head coach John L. Smith.

SEATTLE TIMES TALKS ABOUT WHITT TO WASHINGTON

According to the Seattle Times, Washington likes Kyle Whittingham but as we’ve said many times, it is very likely he stays at Utah due to his ties in the area: “Also, ...A source said that UW has inquired about talking with Texas Tech coach Mike Leach. And one source said that Utah’s Kyle Wittingham may also be in the picture, though the general thought on him is that he would be hard to pry away right now.”

THE NEXT TIME YOU ARE SCREAMING FOR A TRADE TO PUT THE JAZZ OVER THE TOP

Remember the case of Devin Harris for Jason Kidd. Harris is becoming an All-Star point guard and he torched the Jazz for 34 in their 105-88 win on Saturday night for the Nets, who are on the upswing with some young talent and the desperate Dallas Mavericks have a great name-so-so play point who best days are wayyyy behind him. Harris is 25. Kidd is 36 going on 50. The Mavericks are toast and Harris has always given D-Will some trouble, healthy or not. Good thing the Jazz only see this guy twice a year and he’s out of the West, he’s just going to get better.

TEXT DUMPING: WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND

Former tennis player and Wimbledon champ Boris Becker was dumped by his fiance via text and she sent it 5 times just to make sure he got the message . Sounds pretty brutal to dump anyone that way let alone a fiance. You’d think that unless you knew that the former German tennis star dumped his girlfriend via text just a year earlier.

AN UPDATE

On the man and woman who didn’t know each other and had a girlfriend and husband respectively waiting for them at their seats as they had sex in a stall at a Minnesota-Iowa game a couple weeks back. By the way, a pic of the woman, Lois Feldman 38, is below.  This woman clearly is a tramp and has her hhusband hoodwinked: “Feldman, a married mother of three, has been the target of Internet jokes and prank telephone calls today. She was fired this morning from an assisted living center, where she had been an administrator. Feldman said her husband, Kelly, has been supportive. She said he faults himself for not going with her when she left her seat to use the restroom before halftime.FAULTS HIMSELF???? This woman has convinced this man that she is such a slut that she can’t even go to the bathroom alone if she’s had a couple glasses of ripple? Dude, get yourself a new woman and grab your pair back at the door.
